A team of JustEd researchers just received a grant of 480.000 euros from the Academy of Finland. The aim of the project ‘Local Educational Ethos’ is to study well-performing comprehensive schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods in metropolitan Helsinki, investigating how schools can fight the problems of segregation and alleviate the effects of local disadvantage to create equal opportunities for pupils in deprived neighborhoods.

The project will contribute to the academic and the societal debate on how and through which mediating mechanisms emerging social and educational disadvantages can be tackled locally in neighborhoods and schools.

Associate Professor Sonja Kosunen will lead the research team Hannu Simola, Heidi Vartiainen, Venla Bernelius and Sara Juvonen at the University of Helsinki. The team will be collaborating with researchers at universities in New Zealand, England and Sweden.
