Professor Paola Valero (JustEd team 3) is visiting Helsinki in November through the JustEd mobility fellowship programme. One of the reasons for Paola to visit Helsinki is that she is co-writing a paper on subjectivity together with professor Kristiina Brunila (JustEd team 2) and professor Kenneth Jørgensen. On Friday 10 November the co-writers present their work and invite students and scholars to discuss the topic ‘Affective subjectivation: making subjects in precarious neoliberal education’.

“Based on the analysis of current form of governing in neoliberal educational institutions, we argue that the current neoliberal ethos is instantiated in particular types of subjects that are made possible in precarious educational settings. Affect is in such setting a powerful way of governing to keep people in a constant ambivalence between failure and desire for personal development, thus generating both production and subjection closely linked in the experience of educational subjects. The work that we have done has focused on universities, however, we invite the audience to engage in thinking how this functions in their own work settings.”
