“What is straight? A line can be straight, or a street, but the human heart, oh, no, it’s curved like a road through mountains.” (Tennessee Williams)

At the University of Helsinki the colorful rainbow flag can be seen everywhere during Pride week. JustEd member and gender researcher Jukka Lehtonen comments on sexual and gender rights at workplaces and schools in this video from the University of Helsinki:

“We have done quite a lot of progress – LGBT people are more visible nowadays at many workplaces and schools. That is somehow putting pressure on making a change but there are still a lot of problems, like discrimination and bullying.

We can reduce discrimination by asking LGBT students about their experiences. What if there is sexual or gender discrimination, bullying or name-calling at the workplace – how is that dealt with? For example, for teachers it is not voluntary to encourage equality at schools, it is actually legislative ordinance.

To fly the Pride-flag, as a company, can mean a lot for the individuals working in that organization or company. It is a message to them that their company respects equity, equality and diversity, but also a broader signal to the general public, that big central organizations are concerned about the importance of equity and equality.”
